The specialty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) is concerned with the treatment of all structures of the musculoskeletal system affected by physical activity.
Sports medicine physicians have specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of any medical conditions that are encountered by physically active people or athletes. The doctors at the SEM treat injuries such as muscle, ligament, tendon, and bone problems, but they may also treat chronic illnesses that can affect physical performance, including exercise-induced asthma and diabetes. ACL sprains and tears, ankle sprains, shin splints, and muscle strains are among the most common sports injuries. Our physicians provide advice regarding prevention and treatment.
In elite sport, team physicians also play an important role in performance medicine, in which an athlete’s physiology is monitored, and aberrations are corrected in order to achieve peak athletic performance.
Specialist physicians in Sports and Exercise Medicine have completed medical school, appropriate residency training, and have subsequently specialized in this field. A doctor may specialize in sports medicine as his or her first specialization (as in Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Italy). It may also be a sub-specialty or a second specialization following a primary specialisation such as physiatry or orthopedics.
SEM physicians may collaborate closely with orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists, medical massage therapists, rheumatologists, and psychologists.
